Carpet Museum
Azerbaijan Carpet Museum in Baku — History, Design, and Opening Hours
History and Establishment
The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is the first museum in the world dedicated entirely to the art of carpet weaving. It was founded in 1967 through the efforts of renowned carpet scholar Latif Karimov and initially located in the historical Juma Mosque in Icherisheher (Old City). Over time, the growing collection required a larger, dedicated space to reflect the rich tapestry of Azerbaijani weaving heritage.
The museum moved into its current iconic building on Baku Boulevard in 2014. Overlooking the Caspian Sea, the structure’s design — in the shape of a rolled-up carpet — symbolizes national pride in the centuries-old art of weaving.
Architecture and Exhibits
Designed by Austrian architect Franz Janz, the museum building is a striking modern interpretation of traditional forms. The interior showcases over 10,000 items, including:
-
Antique handwoven carpets and rug fragments from various Azerbaijani regions
-
Textiles, national costumes, embroidery, and jewelry
-
Traditional copperware and wood furnishings
-
Archival materials and documents on carpet weaving history
The exhibition is organized by historical periods and regional styles, offering visitors an immersive journey into Azerbaijan’s cultural fabric. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, and educational workshops.
