Cathedral of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women
Cathedral of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women in Baku — the spiritual heart of Orthodox Christianity in Azerbaijan
The Cathedral of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women is the main Orthodox Christian church in Baku and a central place of worship for the Orthodox community of Azerbaijan. It holds deep historical and spiritual significance and serves as a religious and cultural landmark for the Russian-speaking population of the country.
Historical background
The cathedral was originally built in 1909 during Baku’s economic and cultural boom, largely fueled by the oil industry. Its construction was funded by donations from local Orthodox believers, including wealthy patrons and philanthropists. The church was dedicated to the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women — the first to witness the Resurrection of Christ.
During the Soviet era, the church was closed and repurposed for secular use, including storage and public offices. Only in the 1990s, following Azerbaijan’s independence, was the cathedral returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and gradually restored.
In 2000, full renovation was completed, and today it stands as one of the most beautiful Orthodox cathedrals in the South Caucasus.
Architecture and design
The cathedral is built in traditional Russian-Byzantine style, featuring five domes, a large central cupola, and light-colored stonework. Its architecture is both grand and harmonious, with intricate decorative details. Inside, the cathedral features classic Orthodox iconography — frescoes, mosaics, an ornate iconostasis, and stained-glass windows.
The church houses revered Orthodox relics, including icons containing holy relics. During major feast days, the cathedral hosts elaborate liturgies, processions, and spiritual concerts.
Spiritual and social role
The cathedral functions as a hub for spiritual education and community engagement. It offers a Sunday school, a library, and various educational and cultural events that promote Christian values and traditions.
It also plays a role in Azerbaijan’s interfaith dialogue, fostering respect and understanding among the country’s diverse religious communities.
Location
The cathedral is located in central Baku, on Academician Zahid Khalilov Street, with easy access by public and private transport. Its central location makes it a popular site for both worshippers and visitors interested in the cultural heritage of Baku.
