Heydar Mosque
Heydar Mosque — a symbol of faith, unity, and architectural grandeur in Azerbaijan
The Heydar Mosque (Heydər Məscidi) is one of the most impressive and modern mosques in Azerbaijan. Commissioned by President Ilham Aliyev and named in honor of the national leader Heydar Aliyev, the mosque serves not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural and spiritual center reflecting the country’s deep respect for Islamic values and heritage.
Architecture and design
Located in the Binagadi district of Baku, the Heydar Mosque occupies over 12,000 square meters and was completed in 2014. Its design integrates classical Islamic architectural elements with modern aesthetics. The structure embodies both Shi’a and Sunni traditions, emphasizing Azerbaijan’s commitment to interfaith harmony.
The mosque is constructed from white aglay stone, a signature material in Baku’s architectural identity. The façade and interiors are adorned with Arabic calligraphy from the Qur'an, intricate geometric patterns, and mosaics. The central dome rises 55 meters high, and four minarets reach 95 meters, making it the tallest mosque in the country.
The interior features beautifully painted ceilings, a spacious prayer hall, and subtle lighting that highlights the architectural details. The mosque can accommodate over 1,500 worshippers inside and up to 10,000 in the outdoor courtyard during major religious events.
Functions and cultural role
The Heydar Mosque serves as a hub for religious activities, educational programs, and interfaith dialogue. It hosts lectures, Qur’an readings, religious conferences, and cultural events. As a mosque open to both Shi’a and Sunni communities, it stands as a powerful symbol of religious unity and national solidarity.
During important Islamic holidays, the mosque becomes a gathering point for large-scale prayers, Friday sermons, and Ramadan iftars, welcoming believers from across Baku and other regions.
A new landmark in Baku
More than just a religious structure, the Heydar Mosque represents the state’s commitment to preserving spiritual heritage while promoting modern development. It has become one of Baku’s architectural landmarks and a meaningful stop for visitors interested in the contemporary religious and cultural landscape of Azerbaijan.
