The Maiden Tower

Maiden Tower Museum in Baku — History, Foundation, Opening Hours

History

The Maiden Tower (Azerbaijani: Qız Qalası) is one of Baku’s most iconic and enigmatic landmarks, located in the heart of the Old City (Icherisheher), on the edge of the Caspian Sea. This cylindrical stone structure is widely believed to have been built in the 12th century, although archaeological evidence suggests that its foundations may date back as far as the 5th or 6th century.

The true purpose of the Maiden Tower remains unclear. Theories range from its being a Zoroastrian fire temple or astronomical observatory to a defensive structure or lighthouse. Its thick walls, internal spiral staircase, and high observation deck make it a unique architectural monument. The name “Maiden Tower” is tied to a popular legend about a girl who leapt to her death from its top, escaping a forced marriage.

Museum Establishment

Since 2000, the Maiden Tower has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. As part of a national initiative to preserve cultural heritage, the tower underwent restoration and was transformed into a museum.

Each floor of the museum features exhibitions highlighting the tower’s history, restoration efforts, archaeological finds, and the many legends associated with it. The museum utilizes modern technologies such as 3D models, animations, and interactive panels to engage visitors.

At the top of the tower, visitors can enjoy a scenic panoramic view of Baku, the Caspian Sea, and the surrounding Old City.
