The Palace of the Shirvanshahs
Palace of the Shirvanshahs Museum in Baku — History, Foundation, Opening Hours
History
The Palace of the Shirvanshahs is one of the most important historical and architectural landmarks in Azerbaijan, located within Baku’s Old City (Icherisheher). This monumental complex dates back to the 15th century and was built during the reign of the Shirvanshah dynasty, which ruled the region of Shirvan. The capital was relocated from Shamakhi to Baku following a devastating earthquake.
The palace complex includes the main building, the mausoleum of Seyyid Yahya Bakuvi and Bahlul, a mosque with a minaret, the Eastern Portal (Murad’s Gate), a bathhouse, and a pavilion known as Divankhana. Constructed over several stages, the ensemble displays a harmonious blend of Islamic and local architectural styles.
Museum Establishment
After periods of decline and damage, the palace underwent restoration during the 20th century. In 1964, it was declared an architectural reserve, and in 2000, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Walled City of Baku.
Today, the palace functions as a historical and architectural museum. It features exhibitions that highlight the daily life, art, culture, and religion of the Shirvanshah period. Visitors can explore archaeological artifacts, ceramics, coins, manuscripts, and carefully reconstructed interior spaces.
