Göygöl – The Natural Gem of Azerbaijan

General Information

Göygöl is a picturesque town in western Azerbaijan, located about 20 km south of Ganja. The town is famous for its stunning natural landscapes, German heritage, and the breathtaking Göygöl Lake, considered one of the most beautiful places in the country.

Göygöl serves as the administrative center of the Göygöl district and has a rich history tied to both German settlers and ancient Turkic peoples who once inhabited the region.

History

The town was founded in 1819 by German settlers and was originally called Helenendorf. It was the first German colony in the South Caucasus, established by immigrants from Württemberg, who were resettled here by the Russian government. The Germans played a significant role in developing the town’s winemaking industry, agriculture, and architecture.

After World War II, most ethnic Germans were deported, and the town was renamed Khanlar. In 2008, it was renamed Göygöl, after the famous lake.

Today, Göygöl remains a small but charming town, attracting visitors with its natural beauty, history, and architectural heritage.
