Mingachevir – The "City of Light" of Azerbaijan
Mingachevir is the fourth-largest city in Azerbaijan, located on the banks of the Kura River, approximately 280 km west of Baku. It is known as the "City of Light" due to the country's largest hydroelectric power station, which supplies a significant portion of Azerbaijan's electricity.
History
Mingachevir has an ancient history dating back to the era of Caucasian Albania (3rd century BC). Archaeological findings in the city’s surroundings indicate the existence of an ancient settlement. However, modern Mingachevir was officially founded in 1948 as an industrial center during the construction of the Mingachevir Hydroelectric Power Station.
