History and Development

  • The Tovuz region in western Azerbaijan has an ancient winemaking heritage that dates back prior to the 7th century AD. Archaeological discoveries reveal early wine production.

  • In the 19th century, German colonists such as Christopher Froer and Christian Gummel revitalized viticulture here, producing high-quality wines and brandies that became well-known across Russia.

  • Soviet-era production continued, though the focus on quality reemerged in the 21st century.

  • Today, the regional brand Tovuz Baltiya is recognized for producing table wines, fruit wines, brandies, and sparkling wines.

Terroir and Production

  • Located near the southern foothills of the Lesser Caucasus.

  • Three distinct climatic zones: dry subtropical, moderately dry plains, and cooler mountainous areas up to 2000 m elevation.

  • Soils are dry, and the air combines influences from the Caspian Sea, the mountains, and Central Asia.

  • Vineyards are managed with a focus on tradition and quality, while production employs European-style techniques and foreign expertise.

Wine and Beverage Range

Table & Sparkling Wines:

  • Red, white, dry, and semi-dry. Varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Saperavi, Madrasa, Rkatsiteli, and others.

  • Fruit wines produced include pomegranate, quince, cornelian cherry, wild quince.

  • Sparkling wines are made using both traditional and Charmat methods, available in dry and semi-dry versions.

Fruit Wines & Brandies:

  • Semi-dry fruit wines made from pomegranate, quince, cornelian cherry.

  • Brandy products are aged in oak barrels and include classic cognac-style spirits.
