Winery Khareba

Winery Khareba — winery and visitor complex in Kakheti

Brief overview
Winery Khareba is one of Georgia’s largest wine producers and a popular wine-tourism destination. The estate combines traditional qvevri methods with modern winemaking. Its signature attraction is the Kvareli Wine Cave—underground tunnels used for maturation in a naturally stable microclimate.

History and scale
Founded in 1995. The company manages about 1,500 hectares of vineyards across several regions. The portfolio includes over 70 labels from roughly 30 indigenous and international grape varieties, with an emphasis on estate-grown fruit.

Kvareli Wine Cave (tunnels)
Carved into the slope of the Greater Caucasus above the Alazani Valley, the tunnels were built between 1958 and 1962. The network extends for about 7.7 km, with two main galleries linked by 13 cross-passages. Inside, the temperature stays at 12–14 °C with around 70% humidity year-round—ideal for storage and aging.

Grapes and styles
Whites: Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Khikhvi, Mtsvane and others.
Reds: Saperavi, Otskhanuri Sapere and others.
The range spans European-style and traditional qvevri wines, as well as sparkling wines, brandy and chacha.

Visiting and experiences
• Guided tastings and themed tours through the tunnels.
• Hands-on classes: baking bread in a tone oven, making churchkhela, Adjarian khachapuri and khinkali; demonstrations on qvevri and local crafts.
• A restaurant above the tunnels with views over the Alazani Valley.
• Photogenic viewpoints and wine boutiques with gift selections.

Practical tips
Located in Kvareli (Kakheti), with convenient road access from Tbilisi. Allow 1.5–3 hours for a standard tour and tasting. Advance booking is recommended in peak months. It is cool inside the tunnels—bring a light layer. Suitable for solo travelers, couples, families and groups.
