Naftalan is a unique resort city in Azerbaijan, famous for its therapeutic oil baths. It is located about 50 km from Ganja and is one of the country's top medical tourism destinations.

Culture and History

The city's name comes from the Persian word "naft" (oil). The healing properties of Naftalan oil have been known since ancient times, with mentions in historical writings by travelers and physicians. During the Soviet era, a major sanatorium complex was built here, which still operates today.

Naftalan’s cuisine follows traditional Azerbaijani flavors, with popular dishes such as:

  • Dovga – a cold yogurt soup with herbs.
  • Pahlava – a layered pastry dessert with nuts and honey.
